Ses études romanes à l’Université de Limoges et de Toulouse-le-Mirail aboutirent à un mémoire de maîtrise sur Jean Boudou (direction Jean Mouzat) puis à une thèse de sociolinguistique occitane (direction J.-L. Fossat, 1980). Elle est l’autrice de deux recueils de poèmes : Mejauvença (1974, prix Flor de Prima) et Per grasir l’aura dolçana (1998, Gai Saber), Six Yeux pour deux mains (2000, Éditions du Fredon), poèmes  à partir de gravures de Diane de Bournazel. Lo Leberaubre, La Clau, Lo Gai Saber ainsi que d’autres revues occitanes et françaises ont régulièrement accueilli ses poèmes en occitan. En 1979, elle publia : L’occitan redde e ben : lo lemosin (Omnivox). Elle est co-auteure de Òc-ben ! (manuels pour apprendre l’occitan, 2 volumes, CRDP d’Aquitaine). Pour le jeune public, elle a traduit ou adapté une vingtaine d’ouvrages : récits, poésies, comptines, adaptation de contes de la tradition orale, ensembles pédagogiques édités par le CAP’OC, SCEREN et CANOPÉ. Elle a aussi traduit en occitan limousin 12 chapitres du Roman de Renart en 2 volumes pour l’enseignement primaire et secondaire en occitan limousin (2017 et 2019, CAP’OC/ CANOPÉ) ainsi que quelques chapitres du Petit Nicolas, aux éditions IMAV présenté à Lire à Limoges en 2019. Ses nombreux collectages sur la mémoire limousine depuis les années 1970 contribuent à la diffusion de la langue et de la culture occitanes (<a href="http://patrimoine-oral.org">http://patrimoine-oral.org</a>). Description An account of the resource Michel Meilhac, né en 1911 à La Roche-Canillac en Corrèze, pratiqua tout jeune le violon sur un instrument que lui avait fabriqué son père. Sa passion pour cet instrument ne faiblira pas et l'accompagnera tout au long de sa vie. Il apprendra à jouer avec son oncle puis rencontrera de nombreux musiciens (Henri Momboisse, Jean Ségurel, Marcel Chirol), pratiquera le folklore avec l'École Ventadour à Tulle et enregistrera même quelques disques. Après des années de recherche autour de ce musicien exceptionnel, Françoise Étay nous a confié ce document. Elle nous livre un travail très complet : après une biographie rapide, elle évoque son jeu au violon puis présente les enregistrements qui sont parvenus jusqu'à nous.
